Carmentalis is a Goddess of childbirth and prophecy. She is also a Goddess of healing. Her name is associated with the word carmen, which means spell, prophecy or poem. Her sacred cult is closely connected with women. Her temple was built near the Prota Carmentalis at the foot of the capital and altars were set up in Rome to ask Her protection from breech births. She had a following from before the ancient Romans recorded their history and even had a flamen of Her own.
